Destination Biking
The 9 Lakes Region is a biking destination for road biking novices to mountain gravity cyclists. Pedaling through the region is a great way to explore the countryside and scenic overlooks. For the cycling adventurist, the challenging terrain of the rugged mountain trails draw riders from around the country, as do the many competitions scheduled throughout the year. No matter your skill or thrill, spring is a great time to plan your next biking vacation. Here are some favorite biking destinations:
Road racing on the Cherohala Skyway is a rite of spring for many bicyclists who annually compete in the Cherohala Challenge. The event offers distances and skill levels with four different rides. Each of the rides is designed to offer a road race for road cyclists with limited experience up to the seasoned veteran seeking to earn the elusive title of Cherohala Dragon Slayer.
Mountain biking fans will want to check out Haw Ridge Park near Melton Hill Lake. The challenging 28 miles of trails are designed for experienced mountain bikers, hikers, and runners. Not up for a bumpy ride, Knoxville has become a hub of greenways and trails. Begin by exploring local bike venues and trail conditions by visiting Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center’s excellent resource page.
Not to be ignored are the Dirty Bird races held on state park trails that bring participants of all ages and skills to compete and to endure. The trails of Panther Creek State Park in Morristown and Norris Dam State Park in Norris are set for mountain bike events in April and August respectively. The Clincher race in Norris is billed as “Ride your bike, walk your bike, or carry your bike… Just finish!” Who can resist that challenge?
At the end of a satisfying day on the trails, dine at one of the many local restaurants to be discovered across the region. Great trails and great events await you in the 9 Lakes, because Great Adventures begin in Great Places!
