Public Lands Day 2020: So Much to Appreciate

Public Lands Day marks a day annually to appreciate the work of visionaries who set aside public lands for current and future generations to enjoy.  Two of the most sweeping bills impacting public land access were passed almost one hundred years apart- The National Parks and the 2020 Great American Outdoors Act.   The scenic beauty and endless water recreation of the 9 Lakes of East TN is a direct result of thoughtful conservation of lands and the ongoing stewardship of various agencies and partnerships.

On September 26, take moment to appreciate this region’s outdoor playground. The theme for Public Lands Day 2020 is “More Ways to Connect with Nature.”    Plan a discover hike or join a volunteer event nearby.  COVID has resulted in a great deal more outdoor visitations, so while you are practicing social distancing, also practice Leave No Trace principles.

Did you know?

The 9 Lakes is home to some of the most diverse waterways, grasslands, and forests in East Tennessee.

All of the lakes in the region are TVA lakes and that TVA has a mission to preserve and protect these waters and lands.

The 9 Lakes tourism partners across the region annually roll up their sleeves several times a year to be champions of the public lands and waterways.  These partners can be found in neighborhoods and at your favorite marinas helping with the effort to preserve and protect the scenic landscapes and fragile ecosystems of East Tennessee. Events are open to visitors, businesses, students, and community minded groups.  Joining an event is a simple as signing up.  Where can you look?  Here, here, and here.

Most litter found is household litter.  Secure items on your boat when in motion to avoid items blowing into the water. When hiking or biking, stay on the designated trails to prevent damage to fragile eco-habitats.  Take a picture, but leave the plants undisturbed.

Future Generations:

These public lands have been a welcome respite from the COVID 19 pandemic.  The wide open spaces have afforded social distancing naturally.  The breadth of recreational opportunities has provided affordable places to go and things to do- safely, outdoors, and free.  Enjoy!
