Chilling Out: Cool Ideas for the Dog Days of Summer
The “dog days of summer” begin when the Sirius star and the sun are in the same region of the sky. Sometimes called the dog star, Sirius will rise and set along with the sun. The heat of the day comes from the tilt of the Earth, when the sun’s rays hit earth more directly and for a longer period of the day.
It can get hot during the summer days, so finding a place for chilling out is on our minds in July and August. While the refreshing waters of the lakes and the cool mountain air provide relief on the stickiest of summer days, there are other 9 Lakes region places to chill out on a hot day.
Go Underground- Caving adventures
The mountains of Appalachian are filled with subterranean caves and underground rivers. The constant temperature of the caves is about 56 degrees, making the caves a cool way to spend a hot summer day. Three commercials caves to put on your list are Lost Sea, Tuckaleechee, and Forbidden Caves. Each of these locations offers tours.
Go Inside– Classic movies and live music
The 9 Lakes region is filled with interesting museums, galleries and theaters . One of the pleasures of summer before every home had central air-conditioning was the cool movie theater. This year, Knoxville’s Historic Tennessee Theater is hosting Summer Movie Magic on Saturdays and Sundays. Step back in time at this regal, movie house built in 1928.
Another Knoxville stop to put on your list is the WDVX Blue Plate Special held on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Visit Knoxville’s home on Gay St. Chill out to live music from regional and local talent.
Go Frozen: Ice cream and Frozen libations
Frozen treats are a great way to cool off. July 16 is National Ice Cream Day. No matter your preference- Ice cream, shaved ice, gelato, and frozen custard are sure bet treats when it is hot outside. Some of the best places in the 9 Lakes to test a new flavor.
- Morristown- Berkshires Old Fashioned Custard
- Dandridge- Tinsley- Bible,
- Knoxville- The Phoenix Pharmacy and Fountain
- Clinton- Chunky Monkey
- Oak Ridge-, Razzleberries Ice Cream Lab
- Tellico Plains- Tellico Beach Drive Inn.
- Wartburg- Tanners Store
Or get a cool drink, literally. This is also the season of frozen concoctions. The marina restaurants seem to be competing this season to serve up the best frozen, fruity beach beverages. Relax in the shade waterside, sip, and enjoy the sights and sounds of vacation.
Summer is fleeting, so chill out and enjoy these” lazy, hazy, crazy” days.
