Getaways, things to do
Take Your Trip to the 9 Lakes Region to New Heights
When it comes to vacations in East Tennessee there are plenty of ways to take it to new heights. Several attractions and festivals offer a way to elevate the senses to make your time in the 9 Lakes region.
Up, up and away in a beautiful balloon
At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a hot air balloon served as the vessel for the Olympic Flame. It was a symbol of the work of two French men who pioneered this form of flight back in the 1780s. The Montgolfier brothers began a fascination with hot air balloons that continues today.
The gentle lift of the balloon makes for a peaceful and exhilarating experience unlike any other. That sky high experience gives you an unforgettable view of the majestic mountains and waterways of the 9 Lakes Region.
What’s Up Ballooning in New Market offers up dramatic views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Pilots and Owners Ray & Mary Ann Fournier offer a variety of rides but during late summer and fall foliage you need to book early.
Not everyone who is fascinated with hot air ballooning goes up in one and many opt for a tethered ride. These are just a couple of reasons to attend one of the area’s several hot air balloon festivals. (Check our events section for specific dates and times)
- Pellissippi State Hot Air Balloon Festival in Knox County (Spring)
- Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Ballo0n Festival in Townsend (Aug 17, 2024)
- Monroe Life Hot Air Balloon Festival in Vonore (Labor Day Weekend)
- Lakeside of the Smokies Balloon Festival in Dandridge (Fall)
Bridging the beauty of the mountains
Located in the heart of downtown, you’ll see a bright yellow chair lift making its way up the mountain. The SkyLift takes you to one of the most talked about attractions in the Smokies. The Gatlinburg SkyBridge is the longest suspension bridge in North America. It spans 680 feet across a deep valley. Your adventure will take you on a walk with a panoramic view of the mountains, while standing 140 feet above the valley floor. Check out the hours and prices for the Gatlinburg SkyPark here.
A golden opportunity to see Knoxville
The iconic Sunsphere in Worlds Fair Park provides a 360 view of Knoxville. In 2022, this golden sphere rising high above the city celebrated its 40th year as the centerpiece of the 1982 World’s Fair. Visitors to the Sunsphere will be treated to unique views of Knoxville and the Smoky Mountains as well as exhibits about the time when the world came to Knoxville. A new Sunsphere Welcome Center is set to open in the fall of 2024.
Sterling views of the Smokies
Lace up your hiking boots for a 5.6 miles sky high hike on the Mount Sterling trail. The fire tower at the summit provides what some hikers have deemed as the most panoramic view of the Smokies. The moderately rugged trail winds its way through firs and spruce on its upward ascent. Trailheads can be found in the Cosby Campground or off of I40. The trail also abounds in history dating from early settlements to Civil War deserters. Be sure to stop by Our Place in Cosby for a cup of coffee and to learn more about the area.
With so many sky-high adventures in the 9 Lakes, you will want to get elevated.
